Is public deliberation the key to climate action? What is the role of climate assemblies? How can we best engage citizens to meaningfully participate in climate decision-making? These were some of the questions discussed in the second event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy, on 11 June at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm, with Nicole Curato.

The Eighth Melbourne Forum on Constitution Building in Asia and the Pacific brought together scholars and practitioners to Taipei, Republic of China (Taiwan) to examine the defining global challenge of our time - climate change - from a constitutional perspective. Our region is highly affected by a changing climate, posing risks to the livelihoods of peoples and in some cases, the very existence of states.

Natural hazards not only present a huge humanitarian threat but also unparalleled challenges to electoral stakeholders seeking to protect electoral integrity during emergencies. Events like floods, hurricanes, heatwaves, and wildfires can trigger the postponement of elections, affect campaigns, and impact electoral operations and the choices that voters make.

International IDEA and the Finnish Ministry of Justice organized a Protecting Elections Workshop in Helsinki, Finland, on 17-18 June. This event, the first since formalizing their partnership under the Protecting Elections project, brought together various national organizations to discuss electoral integrity challenges and solutions. Finland is a mature democracy with excellent track record in the organization of elections. The electoral management is the responsibility of a dedicated team within the Ministry of Justice, which—due to a wealth of knowledge and experiences—is considered an important project partner.

The European elections, held across the European Union from June 6 to June 9, 2024, drew millions of voters to the polls. During this pivotal democratic event, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) played a crucial role by supporting essential visits for Ukraine’s Central Election Commission (CEC) as part of the International Visitors’ Programmes.

The Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Award for Democratic Governance, named after The Gambia’s First President, was awarded to Jainaba Faye, Head of International IDEA's Gambia Office, in recognition of her significant achievements in advancing democracy in The Gambia.

The second implementation event of the Libyan core group took place in Tunis from 11 to 12 June 2024. To ensure broader country-wide representation, the group membership was expanded to include new participants from the east of Libya. 

Natural resources feature prominently in many political and economic settlement processes after conflict. When these processes include constitutional reform, it may be expected that mechanisms for natural resource governance would be included in the new constitutional framework, but often this is not the case.
