Luxembourg’s Chairship of the Council of Member States of International IDEA in 2024 culminated in the 33rd annual meeting of the Council and a series of side events organized on 5-6 December 2024 at the Institute’s headquarters in Stockholm and online. Luxembourg led the governance agenda of the Institute with the support of Vice Chairs Norway and Uruguay.

La presidencia de Luxemburgo del Consejo de Estados miembros de IDEA Internacional en 2024 culminó con la 33.ª reunión anual del Consejo y una serie de eventos paralelos organizados los días 5 y 6 de diciembre de 2024 en la sede del Instituto en Estocolmo y en línea. Luxemburgo lideró la agenda de gobernanza del Instituto con el apoyo de los vicepresidentes Noruega y Uruguay.

The 33rd annual Council meeting and side events on 5-6 December 2024 brought together Member States and Observers from over thirty countries to discuss democracy-related issues such as elections, constitution building, and gender equality. The timing was fitting as 2024, the year referred to as the “Global Elections Super-Cycle,” was drawing to a close.

La 33.ª reunión anual del Consejo y los eventos paralelos que se celebraron los días 5 y 6 de diciembre de 2024 reunieron a Estados miembros y observadores de más de treinta países para debatir cuestiones relacionadas con la democracia, como las elecciones, la elaboración de constituciones y la igualdad de género. El momento fue oportuno, ya que 2024, el año conocido como el “superciclo electoral mundial”, estaba llegando a su fin.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), in partnership with the Gambia Press Union (GPU) and with support from the European Union, conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop on December 2-3, 2024. This event trained 30 press editors and journalists on conflict-sensitive media coverage related to the government’s implementation of the White Paper on the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) report.

In late November 2024, representatives from several Fijian-based organizations signed a Terms of Reference to form a working group on preventing disinformation in electoral processes in Fiji.

At the Council of Member States meeting convened on 6 December 2024, at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm and online, Luxembourg, represented by Ambassador Henri Schumacher, handed over the Chairship of the Council of Member States to Adrian Junker, the Ambassador of Switzerland. The Dominican Republic and Indonesia were elected as the new Vice Chairs. The term of the new troika runs until the next annual Council meeting in December 2025.

On December 6, 2024, the European Social and Economic Committee (EESC) hosted a Policy discussion titled “Forging the European Democracy Shield: Expanding Scope, Deepening Impact, and Maximising Political Leverage” in collaboration with International IDEA, the European Partnership for Democracy and the Kofi Annan Foundation. Nearly 100 participants attended the event, including civil society, member states, EU institutions, academia, and media.
