Uncontrolled finances can rob democracy of its unique strengths: political equality, the empowerment of the disenfranchised, and the ability to manage societal conflicts peacefully. The integrity of democratic process and representative bodies of government remains heavily affected by the lack of transparency in political and campaign finance.
In his State of the Union 2017 address, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated that the “Union needs to take a democratic leap forward”, and referred explicitly to the role of European political parties in the next European Parliament elections, new rules on the financing of political parties and foundations, transnational lists, and the Commission’s Citizens Dialogues and democratic conventions.
This free, online workshop will bring together academics and practitioners to discuss current challenges of electoral integrity around the globe, addressing questions such as: What role do elections play in this debate on democratic backsliding? What new challenges are elections facing? Have the practical challenges of organizing an election during a pandemic proven too strong?
